Tesla phone key vs key card vs watch key
How Tesla’s phone key, key card, key fob and watch key differ: walk-up unlocking, walk-away locking, the 19-key limit and three connected devices, and where the card readers are.

Short answer
A phone key unlocks as you walk up and can lock as you walk away. A key card must be tapped on the reader and does not trigger walk-away locking. Key fobs and watch keys sit in between. Tesla cars store up to 19 keys but connect to at most three phone keys, fobs or watch keys at once.
Phone key
Your iPhone or Android phone, paired through the Tesla app. It unlocks as you approach and, with Walk-Away Door Lock on, locks as you leave. Once authenticated it works without internet, according to Tesla’s manual.
Key card
A thin card that always works as long as the reader has power. Tap it on the reader on the driver’s side door pillar to lock or unlock. To drive, place it on the interior reader; its location varies by build, so check your manual. Tesla’s manual notes that Walk-Away Door Lock does not work when you walk away carrying only the key card. Tesla recommends keeping it with you as a backup.
Key fob and watch key
A key fob works passively within range and has buttons for the trunks. Tesla’s Apple Watch app can pair the watch as a key; it requires watchOS 11 or later and a paired iPhone, and you set it up next to the car.
Limits worth knowing
- Up to 19 keys per car.
- At most three devices connected at the same time: phone keys, fobs or watch keys.
- Leaving your phone in the parked car can stop the doors from locking.
Where Handlefree fits

Which Tesla key is most reliable?
The key card needs no phone battery or Bluetooth pairing, which is why Tesla recommends carrying it as a backup. Everyday convenience comes from the phone key.
Can I have more than three phones as keys?
You can store up to 19 keys, but the car connects to at most three devices at a time.
