Short answer
Tesla’s checklist: Bluetooth on, Tesla app location set to Always, airplane and power-saving modes off, latest Tesla app, signed in as owner or driver, and Allow Mobile Access enabled in the car. The car connects to at most three phone keys, fobs or watch keys at once. Tesla also asks you to remove third-party Tesla vehicle apps while troubleshooting.
Tesla’s official checklist
- Your phone’s Bluetooth is on.
- Location permission for the Tesla app is set to Always Allow.
- Airplane mode and power-saving mode are off.
- You have the latest Tesla app and are signed in as the owner or a driver of that car.
- In the car, Controls → Safety → Allow Mobile Access is on.
- Hold the phone in your hand as you approach or leave the car.
The three-connection limit
Tesla’s manuals say the car supports up to 19 keys but connects to a maximum of three devices at a time, counting phone keys, key fobs and watch keys. In a household with several phones, watches and fobs nearby, a new device may not connect until another is removed or out of range.
Third-party apps, including Handlefree
Tesla lists “no third-party Tesla vehicle apps on your phone” as a troubleshooting step. Handlefree pairs its own separate key and connects only while you run a command or keep its Vehicle screen open, then disconnects. It does not act as a walk-up key. We are still testing how it coexists with the official phone key on more cars, so while troubleshooting, close Handlefree and follow Tesla’s checklist. If the problem persists, tell us at support.
Keep a fallback
Tesla recommends carrying your key card as a backup in case your phone battery dies or the phone is lost. Tap it on the reader on the driver’s side door pillar to unlock.
Questions
Why do I have to open the Tesla app before the car unlocks?
Background restrictions are a common cause: location permission not set to Always, power-saving mode or an outdated app. Work through Tesla’s checklist in order.
Does the phone key need internet?
No. Tesla’s manual says an authenticated phone key no longer needs an internet connection.
