Control your Tesla without internet: garages and dead zones
What still works when there is no mobile signal in an underground garage: phone key, key card and local Bluetooth apps. Practical tips for dead zones.

Short answer
Tesla’s manual says an authenticated phone key no longer needs an internet connection, so walking up and unlocking still works without signal. Commands that go through Tesla’s servers need internet. Handlefree sends every command directly over Bluetooth, so its door, trunk and frunk actions work in a garage without signal.
What works without signal
- Phone key: once authenticated, it works over Bluetooth without internet, according to Tesla’s manual.
- Key card: always works at the card reader.
- Handlefree: pairs a key once, then sends each command locally over Bluetooth. There is no server in between.
What may need internet
Remote commands that travel through Tesla’s servers need a data connection on your phone and in the car. If a command from an app spins in a garage, that is usually why. Keep your key card with you as a fallback.
Tips for underground garages
- Stay within Bluetooth reach of the car. Walls and pillars shorten the range.
- Unlock your iPhone before running a Handlefree shortcut.
- If a result says the car could not be reached, move closer and try once more. Handlefree never retries by itself.
- Keep the key card in your wallet for the rare case Bluetooth is unavailable.
Questions
Does Handlefree ever need internet?
Not for vehicle commands. Installing the app, updates and emailing support use the internet; controlling the car does not.
What if the car has no power?
No app can help when the car has no 12-volt power. Use the mechanical release described in your owner’s manual.
