Tesla door won’t open: causes and fixes
Why a Tesla door won’t open from outside or inside, from frozen handles and child locks to a car that is still locked or has no power, and what to try in each case.

Short answer
Most stuck Tesla doors have simple causes: the car is still locked, ice is in the handle, a child lock is on, or the car has no low-voltage power. Unlock first, press the wide part of the handle firmly, and in ice use the app to unlatch. Without power, follow the manual release steps.
Check the simple things first
- Locked car: make sure your phone key, key card or fob has actually unlocked it.
- Child lock: if a rear door will not open from inside, check the child lock setting on the touchscreen.
- Handle technique: on Model 3, Tesla’s manual says to push the wide part of the handle with your thumb; it pivots toward you.
Frozen handles and ice
Tesla notes that ice in a door handle can stop it from opening. Warm the car first with Defrost Car in the Tesla app, and remove ice from the handle area as shown in Tesla’s do-it-yourself guide. Tesla’s manual also suggests adding the Unlatch Door quick control in its app to pop open the driver door. If a passenger door is iced, Handlefree can unlatch that specific door once you have tested it, though a frozen seal can still hold the door until the ice melts.
The door unlatches but will not move
If the car reports the door open or unlatched but you cannot pull it, the seal may be stuck, the door may be pressed against the body, or trim may be catching. Pull gently along the door edge instead of the handle. If it happens repeatedly on the same door, book a service visit rather than forcing it.
No power
If nothing responds, the low-voltage system may be flat. From inside, use the manual release described in our manual release guide. From outside, Tesla describes powering the hood release through terminals behind the tow eye cover. Handlefree and other apps cannot help when the car has no power.

Can the Tesla app open a passenger door when the handle is frozen?
Tesla’s manual describes its Unlatch Door quick control as popping open the driver door. Handlefree adds separate unlatch actions for each passenger door.
Why does my rear door not open from inside?
The most common reason is the child lock. Check it on the touchscreen. If the car has no power, see which rear doors have a manual release for your model year.
