Tesla manual door release: opening doors with no power, by model
Where the manual door release is on Model Y and Model 3, which rear doors have one, and how to get in from outside when the car has no power. Quoted from Tesla’s manuals.

Short answer
On Model 3 and Model Y the front manual release is a lever in front of the window switches: pull it up. Rear releases differ by model year, and Model 3 built 2017–2023 has manual releases on the front doors only. Tesla says to use them only when the car has no power, never while moving. No app can open a door without power.
Front doors: Model 3 and Model Y
Tesla’s manuals for both cars give the same instruction: pull up the manual door release located in front of the window switches. When the car has power, use the button at the top of the interior door handle instead.
Rear doors by model year
- Model Y 2025 and later: at the bottom of the rear door pocket there is a slot in front of a cover. Slide a finger into the slot, lift the cover off and pull the mechanical release cable forward.
- Model Y 2020–2024: remove the mat from the bottom of the rear door pocket, press the red tab to remove the access door and pull the cable forward. Tesla notes that not all Model Y vehicles of these years have a rear manual release.
- Model 3 2024 and later: the current manual describes the slot-and-cover release in the rear door pocket. Check that your car has the cover.
- Model 3 2017–2023: the owner’s manual states that only the front doors are equipped with a manual door release.
Model S, Model X and Cybertruck use different mechanisms. Read the manual for your car and show every passenger where the releases are.
Tesla’s warnings
- Do not use the manual door release while the vehicle is moving.
- Use it only when the car has no power or if otherwise necessary.
- The window does not drop automatically when you use it, so the glass or trim can be damaged.
Getting in from outside with no power
Model 3 and Model Y have no mechanical exterior door release. Tesla’s manual describes applying an external low-voltage supply, such as a portable jump starter, to two terminals behind the front tow eye cover. That only releases the hood; you then follow Tesla’s jump-starting steps. The manual also advises connecting external low-voltage power before opening a door on a car with no power, to avoid breaking a window. If you are unsure, contact Tesla Roadside Assistance.
What Handlefree can and cannot do
Handlefree sends commands over Bluetooth to a car that is awake and powered. It cannot open a door when the car has no 12-volt power, and it is not an emergency tool. In an emergency, use the manual release and call emergency services.
Questions
Does every Tesla have a rear manual door release?
No. According to Tesla, Model 3 built 2017–2023 has manual releases on the front doors only, and not every 2020–2024 Model Y has one in the rear. Newer Model 3 and Model Y describe a rear release under a cover in the door pocket.
Can I open a Tesla door from outside if the 12-volt battery is dead?
Not with the door handle. Tesla’s manual describes powering two terminals behind the tow eye cover to open the hood, then jump-starting the low-voltage system. Roadside Assistance can help.
Will using the manual release damage the car?
It can. The window does not lower automatically, so the glass or trim may be damaged. Tesla advises using it only when there is no power or it is otherwise necessary.
