Tesla frozen shut: handles, doors, windows, mirrors, frunk and trunk
What to do when ice holds your Tesla shut: warming it up with Defrost Car, the right handle technique for Model Y and black or silver Model 3 handles, doors and windows that won’t move, frozen mirrors, charge port, frunk and trunk.

Short answer
Start Defrost Car in the Tesla app and give it time; it warms the cabin and melts ice on the windows, mirrors and charge port. Then use the handle technique for your model, without tools or force. If a handle stays iced, the app’s Unlatch Door quick control pops the driver door. A frozen seal can still hold any door, frunk or trunk until the ice melts.
Free or Pro: The driver door is free. Passenger and rear doors, frunk and trunk are part of Handlefree Pro (€19.99 once, 7-day free trial).
Handle, latch or seal?
The linked Model Y cold-weather manual is the basis for this distinction. Use the in-car manual for your model before following a physical procedure.
First: warm the car, don’t force it
Start Climate › Defrost Car in the Tesla app. Tesla says it melts snow, ice and frost on the windshield, windows, side mirrors and charge port; for a frozen charge port latch it suggests about 30–45 minutes. The app also wakes the car, so run it only when you need it. If you expect ice, a Schedule that preconditions before you leave can help prepare the car, and Tesla recommends starting 30–45 minutes ahead, ideally while plugged in.
Tesla’s rule for every frozen part is the same: no tools and no excessive force. Ice has sharp edges, and pulling hard on a frozen handle, seal or lid can damage it.
Frozen door handles, by model
- Model Y (and black Model 3 handles): press the front part of the handle firmly, then press the rear part as you normally would. Open and close it a few more times to break up the ice.
- Model 3 with silver handles: press the rear part, then bump around the edge of the handle with the bottom of your fist in a circular pattern. Tesla compares the force to knocking on a neighbour’s front door; never hard enough to dent the car. Take off rings first.
- Prevention: Tesla’s Model Y manual suggests WD-40 on the handle pivot pins.
- Model S and Model X: Model S has Auto-Present Handles under Controls › Locks; Model X front doors have ice breakers, and their automatic doors are set under Controls › Locks.
If the handle won’t move, the Tesla app’s Unlatch Door quick control pops the driver door open from your phone: touch and hold a quick control in the app to add it.
The door unlatches but won’t open
In the cold, Tesla’s windows stop slightly below the trim when closed, so they are less likely to freeze in place. If the door releases but stays put, ice on the glass or the seal is usually holding it. Keep Defrost Car running, then pull gently along the edge of the door rather than the handle. If the same door keeps sticking, have it checked rather than forcing it.
Need to let someone in through a passenger door? Tesla’s quick control opens the driver door. Handlefree Pro can unlatch the exact passenger or rear door instead, once you have tested it; a frozen seal can still hold that door until the ice melts.
Windows and the windshield
- Defrost Car clears the windshield and windows; the car also defogs or defrosts on its own when it detects fog or frost.
- Remove ice from the windshield before switching on the wipers, and check that the blades aren’t frozen to the glass. Ice can cut the rubber.
- Before snow, put the wipers in Controls › Service › Wiper Service Mode so they rest against the windshield and defrost with it.
- Tesla can apply a hydrophobic coating to the side and rear windows (not the windshield) for a fee.
Side mirrors
The mirrors heat during preconditioning or with the rear defroster. Ice can stop them folding. If they froze, fold them by hand once to restore automatic folding, and turn off mirror auto-fold before parking when you expect ice.
Charge port
If the car reports that the charge port latch may be frozen, push the connector fully in and run Defrost Car for about 30–45 minutes. A frozen latch may not lock the cable, but the car can still charge slowly on AC. The linked Model Y manual limits Inlet Heater to Korea, Japan and North America; do not assume that menu exists on a German vehicle. Details in our winter guide and charge port guide.
Frunk and trunk
Tesla’s manuals have no specific steps for a frozen frunk or liftgate, so treat them like the doors: clear the snow off the lid, let Defrost Car warm the car, and don’t force a powered liftgate that won’t move. On Model Y 2025+, Tesla also warns not to drive with water or ice in the front trunk unless it is in containers.
Handlefree Pro can send the open request for the frunk and the trunk from your phone, but it cannot melt a frozen seal; if the lid stays shut, wait for the ice to thaw.
If nothing responds
If the car does not respond, do not diagnose a flat battery from a failed app connection alone. Check your normal key and Tesla assistance. Use the manual release from inside described in our manual release guide. App-based commands require a powered vehicle; they are not an emergency-exit method.

Questions
How do I open a frozen Tesla door handle?
On Model Y and black Model 3 handles, press the front part firmly, then the rear part, a few times. On silver Model 3 handles, press the rear part and knock gently around the handle with the bottom of your fist. Run Defrost Car first, and use no tools or force.
Can the Tesla app open a frozen door?
The Unlatch Door quick control in the Tesla app pops the driver door open when the handle is iced. It releases the latch; if ice on the seal or window holds the door, you still have to wait for Defrost Car to melt it.
Why does the door unlatch but not open?
Usually ice on the window or the door seal. Keep Defrost Car running and pull gently along the door edge. If one door sticks repeatedly, have it checked instead of forcing it.
Can Handlefree open a frozen frunk, trunk or passenger door?
It can send the unlatch or open request for each door, the frunk and the trunk once you have tested them on your car. It cannot melt ice: a frozen seal can still hold the door or lid shut.
