Tesla on Apple Watch: your options compared

Short answer
Tesla’s own Watch app needs Tesla app 4.39.5 or later, vehicle software 2024.44.25 or later, watchOS 11 and a paired iPhone. It can act as a watch key, open the frunk and charge port and start climate. Handlefree’s Watch control unlatches the driver door through your nearby iPhone.
Tesla’s official Watch app
According to Tesla’s support page, the official app can pair your Watch as a key to lock and unlock, open the frunk, show the charge level, open the charge port and turn on climate. It requires Tesla app 4.39.5+, vehicle software 2024.44.25+, watchOS 11 or later and an iPhone paired with the Watch. Set up the watch key while standing next to the car.
Standalone watch-key apps
Several third-party apps turn the Watch into a Bluetooth key that can work without the iPhone nearby. Features, pricing and supported models vary, and some use subscriptions. Check each developer’s current documentation; our comparison page links to the sources we checked.
Handlefree on Apple Watch
- Unlatch the driver door from the Watch app or a watch-face complication.
- The request is relayed to your paired iPhone, which holds the key and talks to the car. The key is never copied to the Watch.
- By default the iPhone must be unlocked. You can choose, with owner authentication on the iPhone, to allow Watch requests while it is locked.
- Holiday Mode blocks Watch requests too.
Which to choose

Questions
Does Handlefree’s Watch app work without my iPhone?
No. The paired iPhone must be nearby because it holds the vehicle key and sends the Bluetooth request.
Can the Watch open a passenger door?
Not yet. The Watch control is limited to the driver door; passenger doors are available on the iPhone.
Can I use the Apple Watch Ultra Action Button?
Only Apple Watch Ultra models have that button. Routing it to Handlefree has not been separately tested yet.
